Consumers' Association of Canada

The Consumers' Association of Canada, (http://www.consumer.ca), an independent, non-profit volunteer organization, represents and informs consumers and advocates action on their behalf to improve the quality of life.

An interesting affiliated organization is CAC Manitoba (http://www.mbnet.mb.ca/crm/law/cac01.html).  While the site focuses on services available to Manitoba consumers, many provinces have similar organizations to help consumers.

Health Information Sources

The Health Links page has several links to consumer and professional information about health care.  These sites have a wealth of information about food safety, medical information, and public health policy.  Many of the sites have taken the time to translate medical jargon into useful consumer information.  However, there are several sites for those individuals that need current information about diseases and treatments.  Many of these sites provide links to specialty sites.  Also, users should check for partners or affiliates for more sources of health information.

Caution is advised because the information provided about the sites was provided by the site owners.  Consumers should be aware that some sites promote certain treatments and some sponsored sites rely on advertising and other revenues that may affect the information they provide and how they provide it.  Some sponsored sites belong to the Health on the Net Foundation which has a  code of ethics for health care sites.    Also, before providing any personal information, consumers should read the site's Privacy Policy.  A question every user should ask is, "Do I want this information shared with third parties or affiliates?"  And don't hesitate to ask who the third parties or affiliates are.

Child & Family Canada

Child & Family Canada (http://www.cfc-efc.ca/index.html) is presented through the cooperation of 46 non-profit organizations committed to the health and well-being of children and their families. The web site was initiated by the Canadian Child Care Federation with the support of Human Resources Development Canada, and Industry Canada.   They have information provided by member organizations on a wide variety of topics.  One of these topics is media influence, including the internet, on young people.

Underwriters' Laboratories of Canada (ULC)

A Canadian safety, certification, testing, quality registration, and standards development organization dedicated entirely to the protection of life and property, UNDERWRITERS' LABORATORIES OF CANADA (ULC http://ulc.ca) is a not-for-profit organization headquartered in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada.
